Wap/WML : Overview
Jean-Michel Blanchard
What exactly is WAP?
WAP (
Wireless Application Protocol) is used to access the Internet from wireless terminals (mobile phones, PDAs, etc.). Its latest version was inspired by the
other protocols that are active on the Internet (HTTP and IP) and which have been adapted to the world of mobile devices.
Because of WAP's requirements, HTTP has become WTP (
Wireless Transfer Protocol), and HTML has been condensed into WML (
Wireless Markup Language). The translation process from Web to WAP is handled by a gateway managed by telephone operators.
