Search Engine Optimization : Website placement
Olivier Andrieu
Results Evaluation
Once the optimisation and placement of your documents have been done, you have succeeded in obtaining top positions in the
main search engines. This is all very well, but don't forget one important point: a good positioning is interesting only if
it drives traffic to your website.
If your homepage ranks number one on AltaVista under the keyword phrase:
strawberry culture in Papua New Guinea, you can be justifiably proud. But are you sure that a lot of surfers will enter this keyword phrase in their search queries?
Monitor your traffic and insert in your pages trackers, such as
Extreme Tracking which indicate, among numerous other statistics, the websites from which visitors come when they arrive on your pages (called
referrers) and which keywords have been requested on search tools to find your pages.
Thoroughly examine these statistics. You should be able to progressively identify the appropriate keywords to get a better
positioning (avoid too general keywords), and to generate traffic (avoid too specific keyword terms or phrases).
Good luck!
