Positioning with Search Engines

On the other hand, search engines are sensitive to the way Web pages are written. By modifying the code, you can try to improve the placement of your pages with them. This means that you must first carefully choose the keywords for which you wish to obtain a good position in listings.

For this, go to a search engine like AltaVista, enter the key words as they spring to mind, and observe the results returned by the tool. If more than 15 to 20 000 pages are found, obtaining a good ranking will be difficult, perhaps even impossible.

If AltaVista lists 500 000 pages, drop the chosen keyword and select another one or combine it with a closely related term using the AND operator - by entering the plus sign (+) as follows:

+website +submission

+lunch +free

When you obtain acceptable results (less than 20 000 pages), then you have gained your keywords. You can now proceed with the next step.

All words ... A positioning can be obtained for a specific word or phrase, based on very strict spelling and grammar. If you choose a word in the singular form (labrador), your position will not necessarily be good (but probably not bad either) with the plural form (labradors). This is also valid for the use of small/capital letters (golden/Golden) or special characters like accentuated ones (maitre/maître, élève/eleve). So be selective when attempting to improve your positioning. Ask yourself: "Which keywords would I enter to find a website like mine?". Ask other people the same question in order to get a better idea.
