Blocking Factors for Search Engine Submission

Search engines are also very sensitive to the way pages are created, and especially to the HTML code. Here is a list of the main criteria that can prevent registration of your document in their indexes.

  • Website with frames. Pages using frames without other indications have few chances of getting listed. Certain engines simply reject them and others can accept them only if they have been specially handled to become more spider-friendly.

  • Pages with too much graphic content. If your documents (especially the homepage) contain less than 50 words or 300 characters in visible texts, they have little chance of appearing in search results.

  • Flash movies. Search engine spiders only understand HTML. No text included in your Flash movies will be taken into account.

  • Exotic addresses. If your page addresses include special characters such as ?, %, $ and =..., the chances are your pages will be rejected.

  • Attempts at manipulating results or spamdexing. If certain pages contain too many occurrences of the same word or hidden text (for instance white text on a white background), they will be badly ranked and maybe the whole website as well.

As you can see, getting a website accepted in the databases of search tools is a task requiring high precision. You will have to review your website occasionally unless your presence in search results is not important to you.
