Search Engine Optimization : How directories and search engines function

Criteria Considered by Search Engines
Despite the fact that search engines' inner workings are kept secret, there are a few common rules that are usually adopted
by nearly all engines. Knowing them will increase your chances of getting a higher ranking.
- A word will be deemed more important if it appears in the URL or in the title of the page, rather than in the body. A word
is also rated higher if it is used in a link.

- The lower the number of words a page contains, the higher the weight assigned to each word. And the higher the weight, the
more chance you have of obtaining top positions in search results. In particular, this means that you will have to choose
between keeping the maximum number of keywords or greatly reducing this amount in order to increase their importance.

- Website popularity is also a criterion which is increasingly being taken into account. This popularity is calculated by simply
counting the number of times the URL of your website is listed on other websites. So the more your website appears on link
pages and directories, the more popular it will become.
