Compressing an Audio File on a Macintosh

We will use the SoundApp freeware program. It is free of charge and you can download it, obtain it on a CD-ROM using the special Macintosh press, or search on the Internet.

Once you have installed and started it, proceed as follows:

  1. Define the conversion preferences:

  2. - The file format (Convert > File Format > Windows Wave).

    - The encoding type (Convert > Encoding > PCM). Pulse Code Modulation is a standard for audio encoding.

    - The sampling rate (Convert > Sampling Rate > 22050)

    - The conversion into mono (Convert > Channels > Mono)

    - The resolution (Convert > Bit Depth > 8 Bit)

  3. Then select File > Convert.

  4. The dialog box that appear shows the settings you made during the previous step.

Figure 1: The conversion settings are displayed here.

  5. Select your original file on your hard disk (here, loop.wav).

  6. Click on the Convert button.

  7. The conversion process begins once you have selected the destination folder.

Once the conversion is finished, you can listen to the result by using the application remote control.
