MP3 Encoding and Playback

As for MP3, the amount of tools available reflects the craze this format has aroused. Numerous freeware, shareware and commercial programs propose features to encode into MP3 or to decode it for replay.

It is better to have a powerful computer, since the encoding of an audio track can be a long process. Though many software programs offer encode and play features, Internet users often prefer to use separate programs to carry out these two different processes.

Players

On a PC, the non-avoidable WinAmp stands out on the scene. Its numerous customising options (so-called "Skins") play a big role in this success. And its dynamic qualities and many options enabling real-time sound corrections (equalization, effects, etc.) make it a pleasant utility.

On a Mac, the WinAmp equivalent is called AMPCaster. Audion is a new product, which offers similar characteristics.

Encoders

On a PC, your only problem will be which option to choose! To name but a few: AMP3 Encoder, EASYMP3 and WaveConvert Pro.

On a Mac, two products head the list of encoding programs: N2MP3 which works as a console and AudioCatalyst, a stand-alone application. Note that these applications permit VBR encoding (Variable Bit Rate), which enables variable compression rates to be applied, depending on the specific needs and the type of file required.
