Music and sounds : The MP3 Format
Eric Chautrand

MP3 stands for MPEG Audio Layer 3 and is a lossy - it works by data reduction - sound compression format recommended by the Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG). It is very popular today as the Internet community uses it to exchange audio files. In spite of its destructive nature, it maintains a very good quality (near-CD or CD quality, depending on the compression level) and subtle differences between an original CD audio and its MP3-encoded copy are hardly noticeable.
