Advantages and Disadvantages of the MIDI format

As we have already seen, the first advantage is the small size of the music sequences, even for very dense arrangements. As you will see in our units, inserting a midi file in a Web page is also very simple and the page download is only slowed down slightly. Moreover, there are many such files on the Web, for all styles of music.

The main disadvantage, besides not knowing the kind of playback equipment the visitor has, comes from the design itself: no audio file can travel in a midifile. In other words, the melodic line of a singer or the guitar solo of a musician has to be played back by a MIDI instrument, which lacks realism by comparison with an audio CD.

To conclude, a midifile sequence is the perfect way to add background music to your Web page or to provide a short musical interlude.
