Creating the Button Symbol

Let's start by creating the Button Symbol:

  1. Select Insert > New Symbol.

  2. Name the symbol "Button" and assign to it the Button behaviour.

  3. Click 'OK' to enter the symbol editing mode.

  4. Use any tool you wish to draw the button (in our example, we used the Rectangle tool).

  5. In the timeline, right-click (on a Mac, Ctrl+click) under the Over option and select Insert Keyframe.

  6. Fill in the button with a different colour, using the Paint Bucket tool.

  7. This version of the button will be displayed when the mouse moves over it, in order to highlight the selected item.

Are you in a hurry? If you have downloaded the project and do not want to draw the button yourself, select File > Open as Library from the menu bar, and select the file fl_menu.fla. The button will then be ready for use.
