Photoshop : Give a Pixelation Effect to Your Titles

Making the Image Bigger

  1. If your image contains text layers, select the command Layer > Flatten image in order to merge them with the rest of the image.

  2. Select Image > Image Size. In the Image Size dialog box, select Nearest Neighbour in the Resample Image pull-down menu.

  3. So, if you decide to change the image size at any time, Photoshop will not introduce any new colour shading and you will obtain the pixelation effect you desire.

  4. Under Pixel dimensions, select the % (percent) unit for the Width (or Height; it doesn't matter which as long as the Constrain Proportions box is checked).

  5. Then enter a value that is a multiple of 100 (300, 400, 600) in the Width (or Height) field, depending on the size you chose earlier.

  6. Click on OK. Your image is now bigger and the pixelation effect even stronger.

We used the Arial Gras font with a 12 pt size and 300% zoom for the text you saw in the figure on the first page of this workshop, but the possible variations you can use are endless.

Figure 2: Text once again, but this time a Times 24 pt font was used to obtain a more graphical effect.

A major advantage! The advantage of using this technique is that the images created make use of plain colour zones. Saved in GIF format, these images produce some very small files, thus resulting in a faster page-loading time.
