Shadow

There is one last detail we have to deal with before we put our sheet to one side: its shadow. This will give it more depth and an even more realistic result.

  1. Duplicate Layer 1 and rename the new layer Shadow.

  2. Place the Shadow layer beneath Layer 1.

  3. Check the Preserve Transparency box in the Layers palette.

  4. Fill the Shadow layer with black.

  5. You have just created a drop shadow behind the sheet.

  6. Select Edit > Free Transform, then swivel, tilt and position the shadow where you want it to go. Press the Enter key to apply the transformation to the Shadow layer.

  7. Figure 8: Align the shadow as you think best.

  8. Set the Shadow layer's opacity to 20%.

  9. Select Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and apply a Radius of 4 pixels to make the borders slightly blurred.

And there you have it, your flying sheet is finished. By creating a number of these sheets with different text, you can create a pretty collection of buttons for a browser bar.
