Merging Effects
We are now going to use a roundabout method so that the following effects are applied to the text and not to our entire layer.
- Select Layer > Effects > Create layers.

Two new layers appear in the Layers palette.
- Click on the first column in the Layers palette opposite the Background, so as to hide the background.

- Select Merge visible layers in the Layers palette menu.

The two new layers are merged with the layer containing the text.

- Make the Background visible again by clicking on the first column of the Layers palette. Then highlight the text layer.
