Sepia Colourization

We are now going to colourize our image.

  1. Click on Colours, Increase Colour Depth, 16 millions.

  2. The image has been encoded again in 16.7 million colours, a pre-requisite to be able to apply a colour effect (the transcoding of the image into grey scale mode had reduced the number of colours to 256).

  3. Select Colours > Colourize.

  4. Set the Saturation to an intermediate value, such as 128.

  5. Set the sepia toning by entering a value of between 15-20 in the Hue field.

  6. Figure 4: The photo appears to be in "period" sepia toning.

  7. Now all you have to do is save the image in JPG format to retain all the image's shades.

Variantes. Sepia is only one of many colours. A photo can be toned in red, blue, gold and so on. To select one of these colours, set Saturation to the maximum value (255) and choose a Hue.
