Eliminating the Colours

The first step consists of eliminating the colours on our photo. Start by saving the photo below on your hard disk.



Figure 1: Our photo doesn't really have a "period" look to it.

  1. Open the original photo in Paint Shop Pro.

  2. Select Colours > Grey Scale).



Figure 2: Colour toning (sepia or any other tone) is always done on a black and white photo.

Terminology: photographers versus computer graphics artists. In computer graphics, a black and white image only contains black and pure white (coded into a single bit). In photography, a black and white photo refers to a "grey scale image". This image is 8-bit coded, which makes it possible to obtain 256 greys. Given that the human eye can hardly distinguish 200, this encoding is quite adequate.
