Creating the Doves Layer

We are now going to place our doves on a layer. Why, you may ask? Simply, so that we can modify the birds without having to touch the rest of the image. Imagine the layer as being a transparent sheet placed on the background image: you can reposition it whenever you want, or re-touch it, regardless of the background image.

  1. Select Edit > Paste > As New Layer.

  2. The selection created earlier has been pasted into a new layer and given the default name of Layer1.

  3. Select Layers > Properties and, in the dialog box that appears, enter the name Doves in the Name field. Then validate.

  4. Well-named layers. Systematically give your layers an evocative name. This will help you to avoid getting mixed up with things like Layer1, Layer2, etc.

  5. Select the Mover tool and position the doves as in Figure 4.

Moving the right layer. It is sometimes difficult to move a layer when several have been created, as Paint Shop Pro occasionally selects a different one when you click on a layer in the image. You can force Paint Shop Pro to move the layer selected in the Layers menu by keeping the Shift key pressed during the process.

For the time being, the doves appear to be passing in front of a photo of coloured rays. We now have to merge the birds into the picture to give the impression that they are flying into the light. The plumage should reflect the surrounding colours.
