Deforming the Shadow

Now all we have to do is deform the shadow so as to create an effect of perspective:

  1. Click on the Deformation button on the tool bar.

  2. A selection rectangle now surrounds the selection.

Selection handles. The handle in the centre of the deformation rectangle moves the selection. The handle to the right of the centre is used to swivel the selection.

  3. Pull the handle situated in the centre of the lower part of the selection downwards.

  4. Release the handle when you have reached the shadow projection limit that you want to achieve.

  5. Figure 5: Setting the length of the dropped shadow.

  6. Click again on the Deformation tool.

  7. While maintaining the Ctrl key pressed, pull one of the lower angle handles to stretch and deform the shadow.

Figure 6: The trapezoid deformation creates a diverging shadow.

For a perfect outline! The deformation of the image creates a slightly pixellated artificial-looking blur effect. Try adding a very light gaussian blur to improve the image's outlines:

Select Image > Blur > Gaussian Blur, and apply a Radius of 0.5.

Figure 7: Our image now has a diverging drop shadow.

Now all you have to do is save the image in the format of your choice: GIF if you need to define transparencies to use the image as page backgrounds, JPG if you are going to use the image as it comes, with lots of colour, or if you want to inlay it in another image.
